Former Rangers winger Vaclav Cerny has dashed the hopes of fans longing for his Ibrox return, with reports confirming the Czech international’s decision to pursue a future away from the Scottish Premiership after formal talks with new Head Coach Danny Rohl failed to result in a deal.
​Cerny, who enjoyed a highly productive season-long loan at Rangers with 18 goals and 9 assists in 52 matches, had become a huge fan favourite. The excitement for his return spiked when his parent club, Wolfsburg, reportedly faced financial issues, suggesting a possible ‘fire sale’ that could lower his asking price, which was initially set around £6.75 million. The player himself had previously revealed he “definitely” wanted to make his stay at Rangers permanent if it was up to him.
​However, despite his strong personal feelings towards the club, Cerny’s agent, David Nehoda, made the decisive announcement, stating that a return to Ibrox was “not very realistic.” The decision was guided by Cerny’s higher ambition: “I know Vaclav’s ambitions—to return to one of the top five leagues in Europe.”
​The formal talks with Danny Rohl, who was confirmed as Rangers manager shortly after the loan period ended, appear to have solidified the manager’s understanding that the club cannot compete financially with the winger’s top-league aspirations. Cerny subsequently confirmed his decision by completing a transfer to Turkish giants Besiktas for a reported €6 million fee, where he was convinced to join by former Ibrox teammate Ridvan Yilmaz.
