NafisaAlan Shearer has given a brutal assessment of Newcastle United’s Tyne-Wear derby defeat to Sunderland.
Newcastle United lost 1-0 to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, with a Nick Woltemade own goal proving to be decisive.
While it was a Tyne-Wear derby full of passion, there was a distinct lack of quality in attack. That was particularly true of Eddie Howe’s side, who never looked likely to score on Wearside.
It was a dismal display from Newcastle United, who have been slammed for their performance by Alan Shearer.

Alan Shearer slams ‘awful’ Newcastle United after losing to Sunderland
Immediately after the Magpies’ defeat to Sunderland, the Newcastle United legend took to X to give his verdict.
Shearer pulled no punches with his assessment, describing them as ‘awful’.
He wrote: “Offered nothing up front at all. Awful. Miles off it for a derby game.”
Unfortunately, the former Toon striker has summed it up perfectly. While they dominated the ball after going behind, they never looked likely to score.
Bruno Guimaraes was the only player to threaten the Sunderland goal, but his two efforts from distance were comfortably saved by Robin Roefs. They were Newcastle’s only shots on target in the entire 90 minutes.

While Newcastle beat Sunderland in the FA Cup in 2024, their record against them in the Premier League got even more embarrassing on Sunday.

The Magpies have now not won any of their last 10 games against the Black Cats in the Premier League. It is a ridiculously poor record that Eddie Howe must address later in the season.
The return fixture at St James’ Park is scheduled for 21st March 2026. That will be the first Tyne-Wear derby on Tyneside since March 2016.
That was always going to be a massive game given the magnitude of the fixture, but Howe and his players have put themselves under even more pressure after losing at the Stadium of Light.
Sadly, they got what they deserved for a performance that was not befitting of a local derby.
