Joe Rothwell has never looked right at Rangers.

Rangers signed Rothwell from Bournemouth in the summer, with high hopes following his role helping Leeds United to the Premier League on loan.

Russell Martin backed Rothwell heavily, but his fitness was heavily questioned in recent months, with Danny Rohl rarely using him since his appointment.

Now, Chris Wilder and Sheffield United could offer a lifeline.

Experienced players have been welcomed, with Patrick Bamford, Danny Ings and Ben Mee just a handful of the older options signed in South Yorkshire.

The Daily Record has now reported that Rothwell could follow them.

The midfielder hasn’t played since the end of October in the Europa League defeat against Brann, which was ironically, the first of Rohl’s reign in Govan.

He has even missed out on the squad entirely more times than not.

With Mohamed Diomande not going to AFCON, along with Connor Barron, Nico Raskin and even Lyall Cameron being preferred, Rothwell has failed.

Rothwell has featured 18 times this season across four competitions, only completing 915 minutes.

With two assists, despite taking set-pieces frequently at his other clubs like Leeds, and zero goals, Rohl knows he can bring in better for what he needs in midfield.

Rangers appear to have promised more signing Rohl in January, and with plenty of deadwood left behind by Kevin Thelwell, selling that will only help matters.

Rothwell could be the first of those sales, but he certainly won’t be the last, with the likes of Youssef Chermiti somehow attracting interest after his massive-money signing.
