Bruno Guimaraes has slammed his side’s performance during their defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
Newcastle United were beaten 1-0 by their local rivals on a bitterly disappointing afternoon on Wearside as their struggles on the road continue. Eddie Howe’s side put in a subdued performance at the home of their fierce rivals and ultimately paid the price for a lacklustre display when Nick Woltemade headed past Aaron Ramsdale for the only goal of the game.
Having led his side to some memorable days during his time at the club, including games in the Champions League and to a win at Wembley, Sunday’s loss was arguably the lowest moment in the Brazilian’s time as captain of the club.
Having played in Newcastle’s win over Sunderland just-shy of two years ago, Guimaraes now joins the group of Newcastle United captains to have led their team to a derby defeat.

Guimaraes, never one to hide his emotions, both in victory and defeat, spoke to reporters following their defeat at the Stadium of Light and revealed he was ‘embarrassed and frustrated’ at his side’s performance and questioned their ‘mentality’.
“I’m very angry, I’m so embarrassed and I’m so frustrated.” Guimaraes said. “There was no crossing, no passing and no shooting. No nothing. It was a mess, in my opinion.

“We know we have a better team than them (Sunderland) but we didn’t play like the better team. It was a mess.
“The consistency isn’t there, the mentality isn’t there. We didn’t compete. The fans expect and deserve better.
“We accepted the way they play with the long balls. You need to compete in a derby and we didn’t.
“We only have one way we can go from here and that’s winning in a few days.”
Defeat at the Stadium of Light was not only one that ensured Newcastle United ended the match sat 12th in the table and slipped further and further behind their rivals for European football, but also one that continued a worrying trend away from home. The Magpies have won just one Premier League game on the road this season and have added just one more victory on the road, against Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League, to their collection all campaign.
That kind of record cannot continue if the Magpies want to push or European qualification again this season.
This time last year, a sequence of nine wins in a row turbocharged them up the league and ultimately laid the foundations for their ultimate qualification for the Champions League. Their form at the beginning of the campaign, particularly on the road, likely means they will have to repeat a similar run this season if they are to realise their ambitions.
A clash against Fulham in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals at St James’ Park could be the perfect game for Howe’s side to banish the demons of their defeat on Wearside. However, they cannot take the challenge of Fulham lightly and simply have to be at their best to ensure their defence of the League Cup doesn’t come to a premature end.
