Rangers legend Ally McCoist has launched a scathing attack on his former club’s performance following their 2-1 defeat to Hearts at Tynecastle on December 21, 2025. The loss, sealed by goals from Stuart Findlay and Lawrence Shankland before a late Youssef Chermiti consolation, left Rangers trailing league leaders Hearts by nine points and highlighted ongoing issues under manager Danny Röhl.
Speaking on talkSPORT, McCoist didn’t hold back, criticising the team’s defensive fragility and lack of creativity. He pointed to poor recruitment as the root cause, noting that recent signings have failed to match the quality of departed players. “The level of defending was unbelievable,” McCoist fumed, referencing the ease with which Hearts breached the Rangers backline.
McCoist urged the club to prioritise outgoing transfers in the January window before pursuing new deals. He believes several underperforming players—particularly in defence and attack—should be moved on first to balance the books and create space for improvements. Highlighting names like Emmanuel Fernandez and Chermiti, who have struggled, McCoist argued none of the current crop match predecessors such as Vaclav Cerny or Hamza Igamane.”
This isn’t about one bad result; it’s a decline that’s been remarkable,” he added, calling for a ruthless overhaul. Röhl, unbeaten in the league until this setback, now faces pressure to revitalise a squad that has regressed despite significant investment.
