Sunderland have been linked with a move for Sevilla star Ruben Vargas
Sunderland are one of three Premier League sides to have been in contact with Sevilla over a potential deal for Ruben Vargas this January, according to reports.
The Black Cats are expected to dip their toe back into the transfer market when the window reopens next month, having enacted a stellar recruitment drive over the summer that has helped them to climb up to sixth in the Premier League table.
But according to online outlet TEAMtalk, Regis Le Bris’ men are already eyeing more reinforcements over the coming weeks, with Swiss winger Vargas very much on their radar.
The 27-year-old is currently on the books with Sevilla, having signed for the Spanish club from Augsburg last January. Since then, he has registered five goals and five assists across 24 appearances, but the majority of his goal contributions have come this term, with three strikes and four assists to his name in just 12 La Liga outings.
But despite his decent return, it is understood that Sevilla could be open to selling him in a deal worth around £8.7 million. To that end, Sunderland, Leeds United, and Bournemouth are all reportedly in “active talks” over the prospect of striking an agreement.
The Black Cats and Daniel Farke’s Whites are both said to be attracted to the relative affordability of the transfer, while the Cherries could be in the market for attacking replacements in the event of Antoine Semenyo leaving the south coast. Speculation continues to mount over the Ghanaian international’s future, with various reports claiming that Manchester City are now in the driving seat to prise him away from his current employers.
TEAMtalk stop short of suggesting which of the aforementioned Premier League trio represents the most likely destination for Vargas, who has 58 caps for the Swiss national team to his name, but it is perhaps worth noting that he is an international teammate of Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka.
