NafisaDanny Rohl seems determined to land his dream signing in January. The new Rangers boss is preparing for his first transfer transfer window in charge at Ibrox and with this season hanging in the balance, it’s likely to be a hugely important one.
Rangers currently sit fourth in the Scottish Premiership, a staggering 12 points behind current league leaders Hearts in the table. If the Glaswegian side are to stand any chance of closing the gap, Rohl needs players whom he can rely on to perform week in, week out.
That’s why the proposed move to sign Josh Windass makes perfect sense.
Windass and Rohl Have Close Relationship
Rangers are hoping to re-sign the forward, GIVEMESPORT understands, however it remains to be seen if a deal can be struck.
While Windass, described as ‘magical’, made 73 appearances for Rangers between 2016 and 2018, he also spent nearly two years working under the German boss at Sheffield Wednesday.
Rohl spoke highly of Windass, describing him as a “great player” with “good movement between the lines.” In April 2024, Rohl also praised Windass’ leadership after scoring against Blackburn upon his comeback from injury, saying: “For Josh the last weeks have not been easy, he had a big injury and again, I told him he must take responsibility.
“If you want to be a big player and a strong leader on the pitch then you must also take responsibility and show up. It makes no sense just to talk. He did this. He delivered, he fought for every inch and this was important. He showed his quality. With this performance from everybody, we can go in the last two games.”
That feeling was reciprocated by Windass, who said of Rohl: “He’s the best coach I’ve ever had by far and the way he sees football and explains it with Henrik (Pedersen) and the staff, I think they’re unbelievable to be honest at what they do.“
After losing his place in the team in September 2024, the experienced forward still spoke fondly of Rohl, saying: “The gaffer knew that I was not happy with it, but I trained really well. I showed him that I wasn’t happy.
“We have got the best manager I have had for a long time, so I am never going to question his decisions, although sometimes you are not happy with what he does. We know that we have got a very good manager.”
Windass Would Be A Perfect Addition For Rangers
It feels like Josh Windass is exactly what Rangers need right now. An experienced forward who knows where the back of the net is, Windass has already enjoyed a successful spell at Ibrox having scored 19 goals and provided 13 assists.
With 76 goal contributions in 182 Sheffield Wednesday games, the 31-year-old was a big success at Hillsborough and he’s managed to keep that going since joining Wrexham in the summer.
Making 21 appearances, he’s started 13 times, scoring six goals and providing three assists. While not an ever-present in Phil Parkinson’s line-up, he’s clearly still a valuable player.
If Rangers can convince him to move to Ibrox then it feels like the forward could be exactly the experienced option that the club need to see them through this sticky patch. Working alongside Rohl again, it could be a win-win for all involved.
