NafisaRangers Need a Striker in January Transfer Window
Rangers’ lowly goal tally is no surprise when you take a deeper look at the statistics of the victory against Motherwell at Ibrox.
The hosts conjured up an impressive 28 shots at goal, including 13 on target, but came away from the clash against the Steelmen with just one goal to show from it, and not one scored by a striker.
Rohl is desperate to improve his side’s firepower ahead of the second half of the season, and hinted at the arrival of a new number nine being on his list when speaking in his Motherwell pre-match press conference.
The German coach said:
I’m looking for this number nine, who is always the starter.
There’s the challenge. And at the moment, there are three players are trying to be the number nine. In the following weeks, we will see who is the number nine. Of course, we know that we score generally as a group we don’t score enough.
Expectations were high that Rangers had significantly boosted their frontline with the big-money summer additions of Bojan Miovski and Youssef Chermiti.
However, despite the latter costing £8m, he has just two goals to his name in 19 appearances for Gers, while Miovski has bettered that tally – but only slightly – with five in 23 outings.
The duo have both been outscored by one of the most prolific strikers in Scottish football in recent years – Lawrence Shankland.
The Scotland international is currently spearheading Hearts’ unlikely title bid, with 13 goals in all competitions for the Jambos this term.
Shankland’s record for Hearts speaks for itself with 80 goals in 158 games, and he is a striker who is renowned for finishing the chances that come his way – as he did against Rangers earlier this month.
That clinical finishing is what Rohl is crying out for, and the 30-year-old – described as ‘one of the best players in Scotland’ – has long been linked with a move to either Ibrox or Celtic without a transfer ever materialising.
Gers can kill two birds with one stone by signing the Hearts captain in January though, strengthening their attack while also weakening a side who are genuine title contenders.
According to Ibrox Noise last month, Rangers have renewed their interest in the Scottish goal machine and are considering a January move, with the player keen on the switch to Ibrox if a deal can be agreed.
The Glasgow club has made many mistakes in the transfer market in recent months, but sealing an ambitious move for Shankland would be game-changing for Rohl.
Rangers Should Sign Windass Alongside Shankland
According to GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Ben Jacobs, Rangers have made a surprise approach to re-sign Josh Windass in January.
The move is being driven by Rohl, who worked alongside the forward during the pair’s spell together at Sheffield Wednesday.
Ideally, Gers would like to bring the Wrexham forward to Ibrox on loan for the rest of the season and the 31-year-old is aware of the interest, although the Welsh club don’t want him to leave.
Like Shankland, Windass has proven to be a good source of goals in recent years, with Rohl being well aware that he netted 50 times during six seasons with the Owls.
As per GMS sources, the attacker would consider moving back to Scotland because of his familiarity with the club and Rohl, as well as the chance to play European football at Ibrox.
