Leeds Fan’s Verdict: Dominic Calvert-Lewin the Hero in Gritty Draw at Sunderland

As a lifelong Leeds United supporter, heading to the Stadium of Light on December 28th always feels like a proper test of character. The old rivalry, the passionate away end, and the chance to spoil Sunderland’s unbeaten home record this season – it had all the ingredients for a classic. And while we didn’t come away with all three points, the 1-1 draw felt like a massive step forward for this team.

We fell behind in the first half to a well-taken goal from Simon Adingra, and for a moment it looked like the old away-day nerves might creep in. But what a response after the break! Less than two minutes into the second half, we were level thanks to a moment of pure quality. Anton Stach launched a brilliant through ball, Brendan Aaronson delivered a pinpoint near-post cross, and there was Dominic Calvert-Lewin – cool as you like – smashing it home to make it 1-1.

That goal extended DCL’s incredible scoring streak to six Premier League games in a row, a feat not seen at Leeds since the late 1950s. The big man has been an absolute revelation since joining us. His hold-up play was sublime throughout, he linked up beautifully with the midfield, and that finish was clinical. He didn’t just score; he bullied the Sunderland defence, won headers, and brought everyone else into the game. The team goal that led to his equaliser – where every single Leeds player touched the ball – was thing of beauty, and DCL was the perfect finisher.

The second half was all us. We dominated possession, created chance after chance, and could easily have nicked a winner. The defence stood firm too, even after Joe Rodon had to go off injured. Pascal Struijk and Jaka Bijol mopped up well, and Lucas Perri made some key saves to keep us in it. The lads showed real belief and fight – this is a different Leeds side to the one that struggled earlier in the season.

Daniel Farke deserves huge credit for the tactical tweak that’s got us firing. We’re now unbeaten in four, scoring plenty, and six points clear of the drop zone. A point against a strong Sunderland side (even with their absences) feels like a proper result. And for me, the standout man on the pitch? Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
