Tensions reached a boiling point at the London Stadium this afternoon during Sunderland’s 3-1 defeat to West Ham, as an explosive altercation involving Granit Xhaka forced match officials to briefly suspend play.
Despite being sidelined with an ankle injury, the Sunderland captain travelled to support his teammates, watching from behind the dugout. In the 87th minute, footage captured Xhaka in a “furious verbal confrontation” with a home supporter. The exchange became so heated that referee Thomas Bramall halted the match for nearly a minute while stewards moved in to intervene.
The Aftermath
New footage released shortly after the final whistle shows things “looking ugly,” as Xhaka appeared to beckon the fan toward the pitch. The incident reportedly continued after the game, with Xhaka seen gesticulating wildly toward the stands.
Official Premier League Statement:
”The Premier League is aware of an incident involving a player and a spectator during the West Ham United vs. Sunderland fixture. We are working with both clubs and the FA to review all available footage. We maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward any form of abusive behavior.”
Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris remained tight-lipped after the match, stating he was “too far away” to see the details, but the FA is expected to launch a formal investigation into the conduct of both the player and the supporters involved.
