​Rangers legend Ally McCoist did not hold back following the Light Blues’ 3-1 defeat to FC Porto in their final Europa League league phase fixture on January 29, 2026. Despite an early spark, the Ibrox side crumbled at the Estádio do Dragão, leaving McCoist “deeply concerned” by the lack of defensive discipline.
​Rangers initially stunned the home crowd when Djeidi Gassama headed home a cross from youngster Findlay Curtis in just the sixth minute. However, the optimism was short-lived. Porto struck back through Rodrigo Mora and Francisco Moura before a disastrous own goal from Emmanuel Fernandez—who has been a frequent target of McCoist’s criticism this season—effectively ended the contest before half-time.
​Speaking on the aftermath, McCoist branded the performance “woeful,” highlighting a recurring “apathy” within the squad.
​”There was no life about the place,” McCoist remarked. “To start that well and then completely unravel is unbelievable. The defensive structure was miles below the standard required for this club.”
​The defeat marks a dismal end to Rangers’ European campaign, with the team finishing 32nd in the table. While manager Danny Röhl remains focused on the domestic title race, McCoist warned that the current squad’s “lack of conviction” must be addressed if they hope to secure silverware this season
