NafisaRangers are eyeing a potential deal to sign Motherwell star Tawanda Maswanhise as an alternative to Ryan Naderi, according to Sports Boom.
The Glasgow giants have overcome a terrible start to the season to currently sit just four points behind league leaders Hearts, after Danny Rohl’s arrival was able to stabilise the team and put together a good string of results, including a victory over fierce rivals Celtic in his only Old Firm derby.
But the German is desperate to add more firepower to his squad before the end of the January transfer window, and the club are looking at several options that could come in between now and Monday’s deadline.
Maswanhise, who has scored 14 goals in 26 appearances for Motherwell so far this season, has been one of the revelations of the season so far in Scotland, which has attracted interest from a number of clubs.
While Celtic are also keen on a deal for the Zimbabwe international, Rangers are also lurking in the background for a deal as they continue to wait for a solution to their move for Ryan Naderi of Hansa Rostock. The Light Blues have tabled a bid in excess of £3m for the 22-year-old, but the 3. Bundesliga side want to keep him until the summer.
Talks are ongoing, but Rangers are now looking for potential alternatives and it’s understood that Motherwell would want around £5m to allow Maswanhise to leave this month. The 23-year-old shone at the African Cup of Nations, and has scored in each of his last four appearances since returning from the tournament.
Rangers are yet to make any official move or contact for the player, but with the transfer deadline just days away, this is a situation that could accelerate quickly once a final decision is made.
Rangers Firepower Could Win Them the Title
At this stage of the season, it’s the small details that make the biggest difference when it comes to winning league titles, and bringing in the joint top goalscorer mid-season will go a long way to closing the gap at the top.
It’s clear that Rohl has identified the need for a more reliable goal source in his squad, and while Youssef Chermiti and Bojan Miovski have done relatively well so far, this type of signing could be the difference between winning the league come May or missing out.
